...like mother, like SON! Check out this article featuring druChristine's best design, Chase!
Chase T., 4, Cleveland As told by his mother, fashion designer Andrea Thompson
Chase is one stylish little boy. Does he pick out his own clothes? No! His dad picks out most of them, actually.
What are you looking for when you shop for him? Good value, good design and clothes that are well-made so they'll last a long time.
Is he hard on his clothes? Not really, because he has so many! Let me tell you, people love to get our hand-me-downs.
How do you find good values for him? We shop off-season. I don't buy his coats in September; I buy them in mid-December, when the sales are going on, and we plan ahead on his sizes. I also shop resale stores.
I love his little blazer. It's vintage Yves Saint Laurent, can you believe it? $6 in a thrift store. Just when I swear off thrifting, I find something like this. Yeah, I don't think we'll be giving that one away.
"I just love big bags," said Drue Thompson, 34, of Cleveland, a local fashion designer and part-time client liaison for the Community Fund Management Foundation in Cleveland.
"In fact, when I'm spending money, it's almost always on bags and shoes," she said while begging us not to tell her husband, Shawn, though she mentioned he has a bit of a fetish for shoes, too. She says that his are all over the house.
At last count, the Thompsons have about 120 pairs in their closet, that's not counting the ones under the bed, around the dressers and in the other two closets.
"We kind of bond on shoes," said Thompson. Their favorite spot for the hottest shoes? Online at www.endless.com.
"They have free, overnight shipping on shoes and handbags," she said. "I can order something anytime, day or night. Perfect for that last-minute shoe fix."
Her most recent pair are gladiator sandals in pewter for $150. "I wear a size 11, so I have to buy when I see them." Other shoe-store favorites are Nordstrom at Beachwood Place and Marshalls, particularly the one in Beachwood on Chagrin Boulevard.
When we met Thompson, she was wearing a pair of $140 BCBG wedge sandals from Nordstrom. The $30 Seven jeans, which are her favorite, were from T.J. Maxx in North Olmsted. The big bag was $40 from the Gap. And the one-of-a-kind coat is her creation.
"I've been sewing and making my own clothes since I was a child," said Thompson. "My biggest fear has always been to walk into an event and someone else is wearing the same outfit."
If she buys an outfit off the rack, she still tries to make it her own. She said that accessories are a fast and easy way to do that. But she cautioned that too many accessories can turn you into a fashion "don't."
"Dress up your outfit with your favorite accessories -- a belt, a fuchsia leopard scarf, a great pair of earrings, whatever you like. Then, before you leave the house, remove at least one piece."
FAVORITE SHOPS "My favorite stores are Nordstrom, Off 5th at Saks Fifth Avenue at Aurora Farms Premium Outlet Mall and Dillard's outlet in Euclid. That Dillard's has great deals, but you have to be willing to hunt. If they'd offer carts, I'd buy a lot more."
THOMPSON'S TIP "Not every style looks good on every body. Find a style you like, wear it and be proud."
